AmeriCorps volunteers from the Texas Conservation Corps at American YouthWorks will be traveling 26 hours to the Commonwealth of the Northern Marian Islands. They will be living on the island from September 2-30, helping local survivors that have been affected by Typhoon Soudelor. We will be serving in a coordination role, setting up a volunteer intake system for survivors that need assistance and registering volunteers and assigning them to projects. The long-term goal is that this system will be turned over to the local leaders and local groups that could take on the volunteer management.
This work is made possible by a grant from the One Star Foundation and the Disaster Services Unit from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Another AmeriCorps group is also going to help, the Conservation Corps Minnesota/Iowa. The Texas Conservation Corps has responded to disasters right here in Central Texas, such as the 2015 Memorial Day Floods, the West Fertilizer Plant Explosion, and the 2013 Halloween Floods. We have also responded to disasters across the nation, such as Hurricane Sandy and flooding on the Yukon River in Alaska. Now, we will travel to a remote U.S. territory in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
We will post more information on our Facebook page as it becomes available. You can help us continue to respond to disaster situations by supporting our program. Click here to donate.
