Our Texas Conservation Corps members are in the Northern Mariana Islands, which were severely damaged by Typhoon Soudelor. Many homes were destroyed or damaged and residents had to relocate to temporary shelters. The islands have been without power or running water. The devastating typhoon swept through the Pacific, also affecting China and Taiwan.

Our members have been collecting donations of food, clothing, toiletries, and other household and basic needs and distributing them to small villages. Also, they are creating a guide which will help those in need be paired with resources. The goal is to set up a donations and volunteer management system that we will turn over to the local community for longer-term recovery.
The small group of islands, which is a U.S. Territory, are currently under a federal disaster declaration.
Thanks to a grant from the OneStar Foundation, our program has been able help in numerous disaster situations. Check out this video to learn more about this program. Here in Texas, we’ve responded to the Memorial Weekend Floods, Van Tornadoes, and West Fertilizer Plant Explosion. Nationally, we’ve traveled to places as far away as New York and Alaska to help communities rebuild. The current response effort has taken us the furthest from home, over 7,000 miles!
