Before Chris came to American YouthWorks, he felt like another number in school and like no one was looking out for his future.
Then Chris started coming here for job skills training. He is participating in our green construction program, Casa Verde Builders. Also, he’s getting certifications in welding through our partnership with Austin Community College.
Chris’ great grandfather was a welder, and he’s considering carrying on the family tradition. But he’s also thinking about a career in construction or youth development.
Not only is Chris training for potential jobs, but he’s also getting involved in his community. He’s on the Leadership Council at American YouthWorks, which means he serves as the voice of his fellow participants. And he’s volunteering on the AmeriCorps Awareness Committee to organize a city-wide volunteer day.
Chris said, “if you had told me four months ago that I would be doing all this, I wouldn’t have believed you.”
Here at American YouthWorks, young people like Chris are getting the opportunity to discover their passions, develop their careers, and get involved in their community!
