DSC00351_2April* is a bright, passionate young lady who is attending American YouthWorks. It’s hard to believe her when she says that she used to have “attitude problems”.

At a young age, April was diagnosed with ADHD and she struggled with her studies.  People in her life told her she would never amount amount to anything and she began to question the point of being in school.  She got expelled at 17.  But a counselor encouraged her to keep trying and so she came to American YouthWorks.

“At American YouthWorks, I became a totally different person than I was before.”

April participated in our training programs where she learned skills in land management, green construction, and automotive repair.  She discovered her passion for being outdoors and for working with her hands.  She says, “something hands-on keeps you more focused,” and she says it helped her to overcome ADHD and forget about the pressures in her life.

April also believes that she’ll be able to use the skills she’s learned at American YouthWorks to pursue an education at Austin Community College and a career in either construction or automotive repair.

American YouthWorks supports young people like April by providing opportunities for them to help themselves and the community.
